DONNA SHARPE, writer
Donna Sharpe is co-writer on the TV drama series adaptation of Swedish author Thomas Engstrøm’s award-winning espionage novel WEST OF LIBERTY (6 x 45 for ZDF and SVT, Network Movie Germany and Anagram Produktion Sweden, Exec Prods Bettina Wente, Gunnar Carlsson). She is currently developing the second novel in the quartet, SOUTH OF HELL, for the screen. Donna is also developing THE REVENGE TRILOGY of novels by South African crime writer Mike Nichol for the screen (Nadcon Films, Exec Prod Peter Nadermann).
She worked on international crime/intelligence thriller THE TEAM S2 (8 x 60 for ZDF and DR), and is in the writers room for contemporary supernatural drama TEUFELSBERG (6 x 60 for Lupa Film and Atlantique Productions, Exec Prods Felix von Boehm and Jimmy Desmaris, for Arté France and SWR Germany) and dramedy MAPPA (Alexander Lindh for ReadyMade Films). In addition to this, Donna is writing her own original work: DELIVERANCE, an 8 x 45 original contemporary medical series, for UFA Fiction (Exec Prod Ulrike Liebfried), and MISS HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR, a single feature film, for Lupa Film (Exec Prod Felix von Boehm, with co-writer Raquel Stern). She was selected for the 2018 Series Mania Writers Campus, showcasing the twenty best emerging TV Drama Series writers in Europe, and for the Guardian Newspaper TV-25 Fast-track showcase at the International Edinburgh Television Festival.
Donna’s first stage play ADAM AND EVA AT THE GATES OF HEAVEN AND HELL was workshopped at the National Theatre Studio, London. Prior to writing drama, Donna wrote, directed and produced over a dozen documentary films for the BBC and researched over twenty more, specialising in history, politics and economics. Her series credits include the BAFTA-nominated and National Television Award- winning WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? the EMMY award-winning and BAFTA- nominated PEOPLE’S CENTURY, the BAFTA award-winning TROUBLE AT THE TOP, and THE MAJOR YEARS. Critically acclaimed single docs include SIR MARK THATCHER AND THE DOGS OF WAR (an ill-fated coup-for-oil attempt in West Africa), MURDER MOST ROYAL (the massacre of the Nepalese royals by their own Crown Prince) and MORTGAGED TO THE YANKS (US/UK post-war financial double-dealing). Donna has worked in locations as diverse as Equatorial Guinea, Nepal, South Africa, Argentina, India, Colombia and Iraq, as well as extensively in the USA, particularly in Washington, DC.
Donna holds an MA in Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) from the University of East Anglia, and a BA (Hons) in History from University College London. She is also a Guest Lecturer and Mentor on the Deutsche Film-und Fernsehakademie Berlin’s “Serial Eyes” postgraduate programme for European TV Series writers. Donna is based in Berlin and London.
