Philipp Gutbrod, born in Rochester, NY, studied art history, public law and classical archeology in Germany at the universities of Heidelberg and Munich. He finished university in 2004 with a PhD “Wols (1913–1951) – The Works on Paper (annotated, critical catalog raisonné)”.
From 2005 to 2011 he was President of the Villa Grisebach Auctions Inc. in NYC. He published several essays and books on art history in this time. From 2011 to 2015 he was Curator and Collection Manager at the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt. Since 2015 he has been Director of the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, where is initated exhibitions on art from the 19th, 20th and 21st century such as “August Lucas – Seeking Angels”, “Hans Christiansen – The Retrospective”, and „Gregor Schneider in den Bildhauerateliers“.
Significant participation in the World Heritage nomination (ongoing) of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony on the Mathildenhöhe; Memberships i.a.: Réseau Art Nouveau Network.
